Committed to a Greener Future
At Bongards Creameries, we believe that sustainability is not just a trend, but a fundamental responsibility. As a leading dairy cooperative, we are dedicated to implementing practices that protect the environment. By working together with our farmers, employees, and partners, we are committed to building a more sustainable and resilient dairy industry for the future.
Sustainability Partnerships
To strengthen our commitment to sustainability, we are proud to be a member of the following organizations:
- Dairy Sustainability Framework: This global collaborative effort provides a comprehensive framework for measuring and improving sustainability performance in the dairy industry.
- U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment: We have signed the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, demonstrating our dedication to continuous improvement in environmental stewardship, animal care, and community engagement.
- The Dairy Sustainability Alliance: As a member of this alliance, we are working with other dairy industry leaders to develop innovative solutions for sustainability challenges.
Our Sustainability Initiatives
At Bongards Creameries, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact. Several examples of this commitment in action include initiatives such as:
- Solar Power: Bongards company land adjacent to the Norwood, Minnesota facility has been leased for a 40-acre solar garden. Bongards subscribes to enough solar power to satisfy all the plant’s electrical needs.
- Steam Power: Ottertail County operates a waste incinerator adjacent to the Perham, Minnesota plant. The incinerator heat is used to create steam, which is then used as part of the plant’s cheese production process, replacing the need for utilizing natural gas to create steam.
- Waste Water: All waste water from the Perham plant is fully treated and used in nearby fields to irrigate crops. The plant was recognized by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for wastewater operational excellence in 2022 and 2023. To receive this recognition, a facility must demonstrate consistent compliance with monitoring, operations, and maintenance requirements; submit accurate, timely reports to the MPCA; and employ staff certified by the MPCA in wastewater operations.
